Dr. Lynn M. Somers is a scholar of modern and contemporary art history and criticism and adjunct assistant professor at Drew University (New Jersey) specializing in postwar American sculpture and site-based installation art, history of photography, and psychoanalytic criticism. Recent publications include “Louise Bourgeois’s Melancholy Objects to be Used,” Modernist Objects (French Society for Modernist Studies and Clemson University Press, forthcoming 2020); “Louise Bourgeois’s Janus, (De-)Sublimation, and Empathy,” Zeitschrift für Ästhetik und allgemeine Kunstwissenschaft (forthcoming 2019). She will chair the panel Material/Immaterial: The Lives (and Afterlives) of Objects at the Association for Art History, UK Annual Conference, Newcastle and Northumbria Universities (2020) and present new research at Slow: A Symposium in Praxis & Theory, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) and Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA) in November 2019. She has presented papers at art history and psychoanalytic conferences and symposia in Montreal, Mainz, Vienna, Paris, Edinburgh, and throughout the United States since 2014. Somers is completing a book manuscript on transitional phenomena and the aesthetics of play in Louise Bourgeois’s sculpture.
